Location

Playa Tamarindo is located on the Nicoya Penisula on the Northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica in the province of Guanacaste.  The main attractions are surfing and eco-tourism.  There are several surfing schools located on the main strip along with surf board rentals.  The eco-friendly activities include watching turtles during nesting season, diving, snorkeling, zip-lining, horseback riding and fishing.

Airport

The international Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport in Liberia (LIR) is now open for international arrivals, taking flights to and from the USA and Canada. It is just a 60 minute drive from Tamarindo. Car rental is available at the airport or we can arrange private transportation at your request. The Norman Y. Mineta International Airport (SJO) located in San Jose is a 3 1/2 to 5 hour drive depending on traffic. Car rental and bus service to Tamarindo are available at the airport.

Car

Most major car rental companies have offices at the airports offering both standard and manual transmission cars for around $50 a day. It's recommended to choose a vehicle with 4-wheel-drive as roads are unpaved and can be harsh on cars. Travelers must have a valid driver's license from their home country to rent a car – an international driver's license is not necessary. Driving directions from airport in San Jose to Tamarindo - Take the Interamerican Highway (northbound), drive until you reach the town of Palma, then continue on to La Amistad Bridge. In Puerto Moreno, continue on until Nicoya and Santa Cruz. There, turn toward the town of Veintisiete de Abril and follow the signs to Tamarindo. Driving directions from airport in Liberia to Tamarindo - Exit airport turn right when you get to the main road. Shortly after passing through Filadelfia and Belen, make a right turn toward Tamarindo. After about 20 minutes, you will come to a cross-road town called Huacas. The signs will say to turn left to go to Tamarindo. After 10 minutes turn right following the Tamarindo sign in a cross road town called Villareal. Drive for 4 minutes and you will be in Tamarindo.
